We come from a land down under

I’m fairly delayed in writing this but better late than never, right?

We arrived in Perth two weeks ago and we’re starting to settle in to our new life in Australia. So far, we like it here. It’s small but very pretty, clean, and safe. After months of not being able to walk to dinner, these two former New Yorkers are taking full advantage of safe urban living and walking EVERYWHERE! (Without Kip trying to grow a beard to look “tougher”)

Our new apartment is in East Perth and is located on a park overlooking the Swan River. The park seems to be a hotspot for traveling shows throughout Australia. Currently, there is a circus at one end and they just set up a tent for Oktoberfest at the other end. I’ll let you guess which one we bought tickets for.

Perth from afar. See it? Sorry... I haven't been very good about taking pictures here. These are all you get for now.

Perth Skyline.
Perth Skyline.

On our first day in country, our relo agent took us on a tour of the city. We spent many hours driving through the different neighborhoods of Perth as well as the surrounding areas. We saw beautiful beaches, tons of parkland and lots of bars and restaurants to check out during our six-month stay here.

She also told us about some Aussie wildlife we need to be aware of. Poisonous spiders and snakes are prevalent here. Being from Texas, this is not completely new but at least at the ranch I have snake boots. Other than the snakes and spiders (which I hope I never see) she told us that the magpies will dive bomb you if their nest is nearby. I sort of didn’t believe her since being kamikazied by a bird is not high on my list of worries but then it happened to us! A bird buzzed the tower on Saturday while we were out enjoying a stroll. Not cool! Is there a way to wear a helmet all day without looking insane?

Other than the dangerous wildlife, Perth doesn’t seem much different than home. In fact, it reminds me a lot of Austin, sans Mexican food. Of course we’ve already tried the “best Mexican” in town; the margs were great and the food will do.
